The 5 steps

  1. Remove and soak. Take off old polish, then soak fingertips in warm water for 2–3 minutes. Softened nails file cleanly and cuticles stay calm.
  2. Shape, one direction. File in one direction with a fine-grit file — sawing back and forth weakens the nail edge. Match your natural nail curve.
  3. Push cuticles back, gently. A damp washcloth or wooden stick is enough — never cut living cuticles. This step is care, not surgery.
  4. Moisturize everything. Hand cream plus a drop of oil on each cuticle. Weekly moisture is what keeps nails flexible instead of brittle.
  5. Base coat, then color. One base coat protects the nail; two thin color coats beat one thick one. Skip polish some weeks — bare nails breathe fine.

How often

Once a week for shaping and cuticles; polish only when you feel like it. The care steps matter more than the color — healthy bare nails beat chipped polish.

Two mistakes that undo the routine

  • Cutting cuticles — it opens the door to infection and ragged regrowth. Push back gently, moisturize daily.
  • Peeling off gel or polish — it lifts nail layers with it. Soak off patiently, even when you are in a hurry.
